rapids and obstacles in an inflatable rubber boat with a team of up to
eight people and a river guide. It is an extreme and never ending thrill
of untamed rivers, which excites the adventure lovers.
The river rafting regions in India is as
follows:
Ladakh & Zanskar - State of Jammu & Kashmir
This region provides good opportunity for river rafting. This frigid river
originates from the high altitude plateau of Sarchu. Originally known as the
Tsarap the river gorges a path out of the rocky mountains of western
Himalayas, dropping in a continuous torrent of class V rapids. The river
then eases into the forbidden Kingdom of Zanskar and slowly flows pas the
capital at Padum. Here it joins with the Stod River, which flows down from
the Pensi La pass on the road from Kargil to Padum. It is from this
confluence of the Tsarap and Stod rivers that the mighty Zanskar takes
birth. The stark, barren and rocky massifs are interspersed with colorful
bands of mineral deposits, which run through entire mountainsides giving it
a picture book finish.
NOTE: The water of Zanzkar is
frigid at 6 - 7 degrees Celcius. Wet suits are mandatory on this trip.
Garhwal Himalayas - State of Uttaranchal
In Garhwal Himalayas, the
sacred river Ganga offers the professional as well as the beginners the
thrill of whitewater river rafting. The rivers Alakananda & Bhagirathi
are the main tributaries of the Ganga and meet Devprayag, frothing from
their racy descent. Their waters are grade IV to V, challenging the expert
to survive the thrill.

Ganges River has always remained a mystery for explorers and full of
surprises for the rafters. Ganga near Rishikesh in Uttaranchal is a popular
spot for white water rafting. The White Water River rafting stretch of the
Ganges is from Kaudiyala to Rishikesh where the river has 12 major rapids
over 36-kms long, most of which are easily negotiable and some require great
expertise.
River Beas - State of Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh's snow - fed rivers offer tremendous opportunities for the
challenging sport of rafting. On river Beas, between Shamshi and Aut the
20-km stretch has exciting and extreme white water rapids. The best period
is in May - June.
River Teesta & Rangeet - State of
Sikkim
The White Water Rafting on the river Teesta & Rangeet
(Triveni), the scenic beauty of the banks, surrounding hills, its flora &
fauna and sighting of several varieties of fishes is simply enchanting. A
river trip is often an adventure. An amateur with a little sense of
adventure can equally enjoy it. These two rivers offer a day rafting between
October to April.
The river Teesta and Rangeet is regarded as a
form of Goddess and used for the purpose of various religious rituals both
by the Hindus and the Buddhists.

Teesta has been graded on the International scale at Grade 4. The icy cold
waters of the rugged Teesta have a series of rapids with varying intensity
and character. It offers one of the finest rafting stretches in the world.
Rangit, a tributary of the Teesta, has more turbulent. River Brahmputra -
State of Arunachal Pradesh
