Destination of the Month- Shillong (Meghalaya) |
Shillong , the capital of Meghalaya,
is absolutely enthralling. It is perched at 1491 m above sea level and
borrows its name from U Shyllong, a potent deity. Its roads are narrow,
winding and undulating, its houses very Anglican and laced with flowers.
The geraniums, poinsettias and marigolds add that divine splash of color
to the whites, the greens and blues of houses.
Places of Visit :
Ward’s Lake : Almost a
century-old, this is an artificial lake in the heart of the city. Although
it is
named after Sir William Ward, the then Chief Commissioner of Assam, locals
prefer to call it Nan Polok (Polok’s Lake) in the memory of an executive
engineer by the same name. A favorite with joggers and anglers, you can
walk around its cobbled pathway dotted with flowers and flowering trees.
Lady Hydrai Park : Barking deer,
sambhar and saras crane sit in an enclosure and attract several visitors,
both old and young. Since the park
is
located in the heart of the city, it is a popular spot with both locals
and tourists. Don’t miss the jhal-muri (puffed rice) and the egg
roll sold outside the main gate.
Capt. Williamson Sangma State Museum
: Run by the state government, this museum is a treasure trove of ethnic
art and culture. Situated in the premises of the State Central Library,
the museum is flanked by a stone memorial to U Kiang Nangbah, who laid
down his life fighting the British.
All Saint’s Cathedral : Bang
opposite the State Central Library is this beautiful, ancient church, it
spires reaching out to the sky, and its doors the color of ebony. Within
its premises are two monoliths, one commemorating the centenary of the
church building and the other, 125 years of the All Saints Congregation
held in Shillong.
Getting there : The nearest airport is Umroi, 35 km away, with
flights flying six days a week from Kolkata. By rail, the nearest railhead
is Guwahati.
When to Visit : Meghalaya is an all-season tourist destination, but if you want to see the wettest place on earth, and its stunning waterfalls, come during the monsoon. In summer, the temperature ranges between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius and in winter it can go down to 4 degrees Celsius.
