Yoga Tours India

Yoga literally means union. It is a system for the physical & mental well being. Yoga seeks to unite the individual soul (Jivatman) with the Universal soul or God (Parmatma) through rigorous mental and physical efforts.

As an art of living, yoga is capable of ensuring physical well being, mental harmony and moral elevation.

It is believed that Yoga was developed about 5 thousand years ago. It has its origin in Vedas, the oldest records of Indian culture. Maharishi Patanjali is considered to be the "Father of Yoga".

According to Patanjali, within the human body there are channels called Nadi & centres called chakra. If these channels & centers are tapped, energy hidden in the body can be released. This energy is called kundalini.

Compiled by the Sage Patanjali maharishi in the yoga sutras, the Eight limbs are a progressive series of steps or disciplines which purify the body and mind, ultimately leading to the yogi to enlightenment.

The 8 limbs are:

- Yamas - Moral code of conduct.
Yoga - Niyamas - Self purification
- Asanas - Postures
- Pranayama - Breadth control
- Pratyahara - Withdrawal of the senses to still the mind
- Dharana - Concentration
- Dhyana - Meditation
- Samadhi - State of super consciousness

Every year there is an International conference on Yoga, which is held in the month of February in Rishikesh.
